What if the earth decided to separate from the sun?
When you think of the relationship of the earth and sun, it gives you a glimpse of the relationship between man and God. The sun is a ball of gas, God is a spirit. But Earth is a solid object and so is Man who is made of the same earth.
The Sun continues to remain at the center of our solar system. Similarly, God continues to be an immutable eternal force at the center of all creation. Now earth revolves around the Sun and remains within reach of its gravitational pull. Similarly, it is up to man to accept God as the center of his life, and stay connected within the gravitational pull of God.
The difference lies in the fact that we have a choice whereas the Earth doesn't. While choice is great, it's this same choice that also becomes dangerous.
Imagine, what could happen if the earth had the choice of telling the Sun you are too hot and so I can't be associated with you! All of life on earth depends on this eternal association. The source of all food and energy on Earth is the heat and light transmitted by the Sun. Plants make food through photosynthesis of the Sun's light. And this, in turn, forms the base of the entire food chain. Everything else, right from the redistribution of water across the Earth in the form of rain to the generation of life-giving oxygen by the plants is a result of this interaction with the Sun. The list goes on and on.
Similarly, a close association with God holds the promise of many benefits including eternal life or rather a good life in eternity. Whereas, the lack of an association with God could mean a life more hellish that what we are experiencing here on earth. At least, here it's interspersed with good times and the boring times. In the after life, from all accounts, it's a choice between extremes.
Thankfully, the earth doesn't have a choice. We do. Unfortunately, more often than not most of us tend to make the wrong choice -- the choice of avoiding the heat or rather the discomfort that arises due to an association with God. We fail to realize that this short-term discomfort is what will keep us from eternal doom. But more importantly, this short term discomfort could prevent a lot of hell in our life right now. Whether this has to do with getting into wrong relationships or getting into short-term relationships for the wrong reasons or our equation with family or friends, or our interactions at the workplace or our choice of entertainment or the options we choose to find fulfillment in our life. The list is long, and it does seem to impact every aspect of our life. So what choice do we want to make -- to stay within the gravitational pull of God or hide in a cool, dark place that seems to offer us the comfort of short-term obscurity?
